I am still trying to create the world’s most ridiculous Facebook status update. Not sure if I’m getting any closer or not.

In 1841, explorer James Clark Ross passed through what is now known as the Ross Sea and discovered Ross Island (both of which were named for him). He sailed along a huge wall of ice that was later named the Ross Ice Shelf (also named for him). […] Most of Ross Ice Shelf is located within the Ross Dependency…

Ross Crater on the moon is also named for James Clark Ross.

I don’t like country music, but I don’t mean to denigrate those who do; and for the people who like country music, denigrate means “put down”.

“Everybody is going crazy about Mumbai’s Blue Frog, opened earlier this year. It’s a 1,000-square-meter complex that includes a club, restaurant, lounge, sound stage, recording studio and sound lab, all encased within the massive walls of an old warehouse in Mumbai’s mill district. […] The equilibrium-challenging effect is achieved by the clever surround-millwork that uses a circle as its main form. The mahogany-paneled millwork circles each round table, forming circular booths or pods in somewhat varying shapes at various levels, guaranteeing great sightlines for all. Not wanting to compete with the lighting or other embellishments of the stage acts, the interior is dark except for the top surface of the booths.”

This is kinda how I always imagined Milliways would look.

Audio Players

nostrich:

I’m trying to find a service that allows me to upload mp3s and link to them from elsewhere, directly. What I also need to be able to do is use that URL to embed an audio player in a webpage. Ideally, I’d like to find a service that does both in as few clicks as possible. But separate services for each part works too. Ideally, free would be nice. But I’m willing to spend a few dollars for the functionality.

Well, there is Odeo, but I’m not 100% sure they allow you to direct link to the mp3 file and they have some occasional issues with things loading really slowly or not working at all.

We see tons of startups predicated on the so-called “wisdom of crowds”, an idea that’s been so thoroughly internalized by people, the actual premise, that crowds are wise, are rarely questioned. But maybe when the individuals within the crowd don’t know anything, the crowd doesn’t either.

Questioning The Wisdom Of Crowds (via marco)

Anyone who is interested in ideas related to “the wisdom of crowds” or emergence theory should check out this episode of Radiolab. Suffice to say, the idea that “you can’t bake wisdom by cooking with ignorance”, as the article above says, is not necessarily what is observed in nature.

Battlestar Galactica Backstory in 8 Minutes

Oh. My. Gods. I am so frakin’ psyched for the new season after having watched the above linked video.

Note: Only watch the video linked above if you have watched the preceeding 3 seasons of BSG and wish to review what you already know. The video is not approved for use by those who have not gotten hooked yet. Seriously, if you enjoy strongly written, character driven drama and you enjoy sci-fi you have no excuse for not watching this show.
