If you want the alternate look when the Dock is on the bottom too, type the following commands at a Terminal prompt:
% defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES
% killall Dock

If only I were not deathly afraid of the Terminal, I might actually do that and move my dock back down to the bottom.
